Dogs eat whatever is put before them, so it is actually you who is responsible for making them healthy and feeding them a good diet. There are different food requirements of different dogs that depend on their physical activity, age, lactation, pregnancy and other such medical conditions. A balanced diet for your dog comprise in nutritional requirements of vitamins, fats, minerals, calcium, and carbohydrates in correct proportions and quantities. You should also take care of the fact that you do not overfeed or underfeed your dog. You can consult your vet for the right guidance of your pet and also read the instructions that are mentioned on the labels of dog food products that are made available.

Puppies that are around 3 months old or even less need around 3-4 feeds everyday and the food requirements of senior dogs can be divided into many smaller feeds. On the other hand, lactating and pregnant dogs generally need multiple feeds all through the day. Some of the dogs are also prone to getting obese easily, this can be avoided by change in the type of food you are feeding them and also reducing their intake of food can be of great help. You may also seek help from the vet for a weight reduction diet for your pet.

Another thing that should be kept in mind while feeding your dog is that the digestive system of a dog is not as flexible as human beings, so any sudden changes in the diet of your dog, no matter if it is the kind of food, amount of food or the change in the label of dog food that you are providing your pet with, may result in diarrhea or any other stomach problems.

To avert this discomfort to your dog, it is advisable not to switch over any sudden changes in your dog food. Instead, you should provide them with a mixture of their existing and new diet and then gradually rule out the existing diet and start with a new one. Also, the time at which you feed your dog should better be the same.

In case, you feed an amalgamation of both dry food and water to your dog, its proportion should be 4:1 respectively. Change in appetite of your dog is also a normal thing, so do not be alarmed by any such change. An upset digestive system and losing appetite for a day or two is not a problem with dogs, however if this continues for a longer period than this, it is better to consult a vet. As your pet can’t speak, be sure to provide fresh water to them at all times of day and night. Not to forget, most dog allergies are caused due to food, so you have to be alert to notice if your dog is allergic to any food item, especially grains. Keeping in mind all these points will make sure that your dog is healthy and free from any allergies or diseases.
